Jeff is simple.
No drinking, nominate night fun, no life.
Jeff doesn’t like the extraordinary.
Sitting in his office, doing paperwork, is the highlight of his day. Going out and not working is boring to Jeff. What excited him was his routine
Its safe. Certain. Normal.
Jeff lived his life in peace. And nothing Was going to change that…
And then she barged into his life.
Episode one: “The Cult”
ACT 1
Jeff that morning got ready for work. He hummed a song, expecting an average day. He brushed his teeth, put on his clothes and entered his living room. His best friend was watching tv on his couch. Butcher was a werewolf.
He used to live with Jeff. But moved out to the woods with his girlfriend.
“You don’t live here anymore, Butcher. I’m going to work. So you gotta go.”
“Hold on. There was another disappearance- look!” Butcher turned the volume up.
On the Lit Fic news channel, the reporter spoke. The she seemed concerned. “Welcome back to Lit Fit news- I’m Annie Sailboard- another urban legend has gone missing. Lock, to the Lock Ness monster people know him, was supposed to appear in Fantaja this morning. But he didn’t appear. He was expected for a high and low concept relations meeting, but no show. Mr. Ness was last seen at his Eastside home. But when security checked on him. He was nowhere to be found. Security told Lit Fic news he was feeling unwell. So he went to rest. That was at 11 last night, and that was the last they’ve seen him.
Jeff’s eyes were intense. “Man, that the third disappearance this month.
“What do you think happened to them?”
“I don’t know. But I got a feeling it’s not good… You gotta go, Butcher.”
Butcher sighed and groaned as he got off the couch. “Alright.”
Jeff and Butcher walked out the front door and entered Galvan. The horror sector in the city of Genre. Galvan was founded by one of the most powerful Legends, Frank Stein. Jeff and Burger walked passed some skeletons beating on plastic containers and their own bones.
“Jeff the human, my man.” Said one of the skeletons.
“Wassup, Harry- I can’t talk. I’m running a little late for work. I’ll touch base with you when I get back.”
“Alright. I’ll see you later, Jeff.”
Butcher looked back for a moment at Harry. “Hey, Jeff. Do you think he’s still mad at me?”
“Probably. I mean, you did use him as a chew toy when you were drunk last month.”
“Ah- he’ll get over it… Where’s your car?”
“It’s parked around the corner. I can’t give you a ride.”
“That’s cool… You still working at that place?”
“Legendz inc.? Yup, still there.”
They turned the corner into the apartment parking lot. “Man, how long has it been?”
“Nine years next month.” Jeff grinned. “I might even get a promotion.”
“I wish I could keep a job. My bosses before were assholes. That’s why I’m working with Big Dog.”
“Isn’t he an abstract dealer?”
“Yeah so what?”
“You do know selling abstract is illegal, right? One hit of that crap and it’ll mess up your body.”
“Well, it shouldn’t be. It has a lot of good medicinal purposes.”
“Dude, there’s nothing medicinal about it. That shit alters you body’s figment system.”
Figment. The energy made by human imagination. Everyone and everything in the universe of genre- all made with figment.
The drug – abstract- jumbles the characters body and mind. It calms characters who use it. Sadly, taking too much of it can alter their story. And makes their human creator experience a creative block.
“Whatever, Jeff. Just be careful. I got a feeling today is going to be a weird day.”
“I always am.”
Jeff got in his car and drove off
Jeff arrived at Legendz inc.
Once he entered the rotating doors. Swift, a derivative of Moth Man, stopped him.
“Jeff, my man.” Swift seemed out of routine. Normally, he’s more monotone and never enthused.
But when he was happy. Jeff knew he had more work to do.
“What is it now, Swift?”
“We got a new recruit and the boss want’s you to train them.”
“Oh, come on- I just walked through the door.” Jeff groaned loudly.
“I know, I know. But here’s an incentive. The boss was talking about your promotion.”
“He was?” Jeff’s mood quickly changed. “What did he say?”
“If you do a good job with the recruit, you got the promotion.”
“He said that?”
“In his own words- If Jeff doesn’t screw this up. His promotion is certain.”
Jeff was unsure of Swift’s words. The was untrustworthy.
Jeff sighed deeply as he looked across the waiting room. Probably looking for the new recruit.
“Alright. Who is he?”
“Not a he, she. Her name is Olga Stein. She seems uppity.”
Jeff groaned even more. Then abruptly looked at Swift with wide eyes.
“Wait, Stein? Is she-”
“Related to one of the most powerful founders of the city? Yup- and she won’t shut up about it. She seems like trouble.”
“Thanks, Swift. I owe you one.”
“Hey, maybe come out for drinks me and my team for once.”
“I’ll think about it.”
Jeff was the floor manager of the paranormal sector. He entered the elevator and pressed the button to the 13th floor. It was the office space for urban legends and their derivatives.
Derivatives are are characters made by urban legends. But they’re usually called Myths. They were known as part of the high concepts. And high concepts could jump from the human and fictional world. But by law, they couldn’t just do that without clearance. So they use Legendz inc. to do so.
Jeff walked to his office to find a crowd around a portal doorway. The new recruit must be the cause of this, he thought. None of them were working, only laughing.
“Ok, guys- back to work.”
Everyone saw Jeff and quickly scattered back to their portal sectors. Except for the new recruit. She continued to talk to someone- the person kept trying to work. She had pale green skin, blue and hazel eyes and black long hair that stuck straight up. She seemed to be patched and sewn together.
“You must be Olga.” Jeff forced a smile. The recruit got off the desk she was sitting on.
“Yeah, I am.” Olga got up and shook Jeff’s hand.
“Please- follow me to my office.”
Olga seemed like she didn’t want to be there.
When they entered Jeff’s office, Jeff sat in his office chair.
“Please, take a seat.”
Olga sat down, and still seemed disinterested.
“So Olga. I-”
“Wait.” Olga interrupted. “Just to let you know, I don’t want to be here.”
Jeff was taken aback.
“You don’t?”
“No. I’m only here because my brother got me this job.”
“Your brother?” One of Jeff’s eyebrow raised.
“You know who he is. Frank? Frank Stein?”
Jeff’s eyes widened. He couldn’t believe Swift was telling the truth. He was in the presence of fiction royalty. But that raised even more questions.
“Wait, if you don’t want to be here… Why are you here?”
“Because he told me if I didn’t get a job and learn the importance of money, then he was going to cut me off. And he wants me to join the family business.”
“Which is?”
“You don’t need to know.”
Fair enough- Jeff thought. “Ok, but you still have to work. You can’t just sit around all day. So I’ll give you an easy Job. You just have to run errands and assist the Myths with entering portals.”
“Ok, and how do I do that?”
Jeff smiled. “I’ll show you.”
The entire day, Jeff was having a hard time teaching Olga the ropes. She barely payed attention and refused to cooperate. She was arrogant and cocky and wouldn’t shut up about her lineage. Even though there was only her and her brother.
Jeff had a headache near the end of the day. He told her to buy subs and coffee for the office floor. Jeff wanted to scream as he got water from the water dispenser. Jeff took a sip, then placed the cup on his forehead. A colleague and Myth -Lady Mirror- walked to him with a comforting smile.
“Long day, huh.”
“Tell me about it.” Jeff smiled a little. “How’s the killing going?”
“It’s nothing different. People summon me, I kill them, I come back. No big deal.”
Lady Mirror was a derivative of Bloody Mary, the most powerful urban legend. Bloody Mary should be there, but she usually calls off and makes her derivatives do her dirty work. Lady Mirror was the most well known.
“Shouldn’t you be going home for the day? It’s nine and the other Myths went home.”
“Well, you’re going to hate me. But the boss needs to see you.”
Jeff’s blood went cold.
“What?” Jeff’s voice squeaked.
“Relax. You’re not in trouble. He just needs to talk to you about something important. He wanted to wait at the end of the after everyone left.”
Their boss was Death. But at work, they had to call him Mr. Death. He was one of the most powerful concepts to ever exist. He was at the top of the concept hierarchy. He was a Timeless concept. There were only two Timeless characters. which were Death and Mother. Knowing this, Jeff was worried he was going to be fired by Death and lose his stability. All because he failed at training Olga.
When Jeff and Lady knocked on the door, A deep unsettling voice spoke. “Come in.”
They entered and saw Mr. Death sitting at his desk in a long and tall room. everything was made of wood and skulls of animals on the walls.
Someone else there.
Jeff and Lady were shocked to find Olga sitting across from Death.
“Hey, Guys.” Said Olga.
“What is she doing here?” Asked Lady.
“She’s going to help on my little errand.”
“Errand?” Asked Jeff.
“Errand. You know- things you need to do.” Said Death. “There’s a party you three need to go to. But it’s not in this realm. It’s in the human world.”
“What kind of party?” Asked Jeff
“It’s a party for Bloody Mary in her honour. But Ms. Mary is caught up in a few things. So I’m making Lady step in her place. You’re expected to be there in thirty minutes. So get yourselves ready to shake your booties, or whatever you characters have.”
“Great!” Said Olga. “I don’t mind having a little rager.”
Jeff couldn’t stand another second being around Olga. “It’s not going to be a rager, Olga.”
“Oh, but it is.” Death corrected. “It’s a cult party. They call themselves ‘The Realm dwellers’, and they paid good money to see the woman who inspired them to start their cult… Now- enough talking. Get going.” Death shooed them out of his office.
Jeff wanted to do nothing more but to go home and relax. But a job is a job, he guessed.
