The power of the human voice.

For so long, I didn’t really like my voice. I thought it was too weird, too strange and off the wall. I thought it would affect how I connect with others. But now, I think any voice that is strange and unique, is just as interesting as any other kind of voice.

Just look at Franz Kafka.

I mean, he wrote stories about many strange things. Like waking up as a roach. I never read any of his works, I only researched about him. But that one premise made me interested in what other things he’s written that I’ve never heard of. Im not much of a reader. But if I was, id most definitely read his work. He is a good example of a unique voice.

So is Henry Darger.

I don’t like the artwork Darger has made. But learning the history of the Vivian girls was very interesting. The sad part is, both these writers wrote solely for themselves. Only to have their work seen after their death. And it makes me wonder. Did they feel the same way I did? Feeling like their voices weren’t good enough?  Like their works wouldn’t be called real works of literature? It’s kind of depressing to think about.

They both lived difficult lives. Kafka was constantly criticised by his father and Darger, abandoned and lived in an orphanage. And even though their lives were hard. Their voices were strong. Now both Kafka and Darger’s works are known by many.

Im not saying I’ll ever be known or have a voice like them. But that’s a good thing. Because my voice is my own. And I’ll use it with pride. And I hope you use yours too.
